Well put! You have hit on two of the most powerful and underutilized resources in professional development today: mentoring and accountability. Even a cursory look at history reveals that the best way to learn about an industry or profession is to interact with those who are in it and respectfully ask them to pass on their knowledge and experience. 

Aside from the best information and insights, such a relationship can also provide objective evaluation, encouragement and a wealth of networked contacts. As you have suggested, many of the top performers in professional circles recognize the value of mentoring and accountability as necessary principles for success and are glad to reciprocate with their time and efforts. Long before there were ivy league institutions and an academic industry, there were mentors, mentees, masters and apprentices sharing life, sharing wisdom; kindly and dilligently building the future from the past.
