Internet Slang Terms Explained (I Think!)

I often come across internet terms and slang that puzzle me so decided to go on a hunt to determine what some of the more interesting ones actually meant. I don’t use any of these terms myself but understand that a lot of people do, and more people will in the future.

So for those of you who, like me, scratch your head occasionally and wonder just what in the world that tweet was actually signifying, hope this helps! If you come across some interesting ones that are not on this list, please be sure to drop back by and share!

• AAS - Alive and Smiling
• AATK - Always At The Keyboard (I will have to use this one sometime)
• AB/ABT - About
• ABT2 – About To
• ACK – Acknowledgement
• ACORN - A Completely Obsessive Really Nutty Person
• ADAD - Another Day, Another Dollar

• Angry Garden Salad – A Poorly Designed Website with Bad Coding As Well

• Cappuccino Cowboy or Cowgirl - Refers to someone who must have a Starbucks or other “Roadie” on the way to work
• Cytizenship - Owning “Real Estate” in Cyberspace. May own one or more domain name or visits chat rooms, newsgroups, or discussion boards on a regular basis. Feels very comfortable and has a feeling of belonging in Cyberspace
• Capsizing – A company that keeps downsizing in labor, but not the workload. The company ultimately goes under

• Digiterati or Digerati – People in the know of the digital revolution or otherwise hip and considered knowledgeable.
• Digital Dirt - Comments you have posted on blogs or in chat rooms that may come back to haunt you
• DINK - Double Incomes, No Kids
• DIRFT - Do It Right the First Time

E

• e-Bomb - A very potent computer virus
• e-Dress - Stands for your electronic addresses such as IM’s and email
• Ear Candy - Musical additives added to a website to make it more appealing

F

• FISH - First in, Still Here
• FAWC - For Anyone Who Cares
• FIDO – Framework for Interdisciplinary Design Optimization
• First Mover - A business that has a competitive edge by being the first to establish themselves in a specific industry segment
• FTF or F2F – Face-to-Face

• G - Guess, Grin, or Giggle
• G1 - Good One
• G4I - Go For It
• GTOWOT - Going The Other Way On That

H

• H/O - Hold On
• H/P - Hold Please
• HADVD - Have Advised

• Loser Error – A play on words from “user error” – refers to a user causing an error, but blames it on their computer
• LOL -  Lots of Laughs or Laughing Out Loud

• M2M - Manufacturer to Manufacturer
• M2NY - Me Too, Not Yet
• Magic Lantern - A code for FBI’s encryption-key and password-sniffing spyware disguised as email attachments which installs keylogging software
• Meatjail - The human brain

• NBD -  No Big Deal
• NP -  No Problem or Nosy Parents
• Net Lag - Slow connection due to a large amount of users on the internet
• Net Nanny - Child safety software for the internet
• NIMY - Never In A Million Years

• O – Opponent or Over
• OT - Off Topic
• OAO - Over And Out
• OMIK - Open Mouth, Insert Keyboard
• OT - Off Topic
• OZ – Australia

• P2P - Peer to Peer or Person to Person
• PaaS – Platform as a Service
• PB - Potty Break
• POV -  Point of View
• Pink - Spam - Ex. Email Subject looks “pink”

Q

• QCD - Quarterly Charm Deficiency – Emotional disorder commonly found in executives at the end of the fiscal quarter
• Quick and Dirty - Getting the job done for the mean time – a quick fix

R

• RT – Real Time
• ROFLOL – Rolling On Floor, Laughing Out Lod
• Roadie – A coffee on the road – to go

• S - Smile
• S2R - Send to Receive
• S4L - Spam For Life
• SAPFU - Surpassing All Previous Foul Ups
• SB - Stand By
• SEP - Somebody Else’s Problem
• Spin - Take a negative and make it positive
• Sweeple – Sweet Twitter people

• Think Time – A down moment due to a slow connection or long download
• TMI -  Too Much Information
• TTYL – Talk to You Later
• Twitterati – Twitter power user; sometimes also referred to as The Tweet Elite.
• Twittermob – Quick mob due to information sharing on Twitter
