How to Clean Up Your Facebook Friends List

How I "Unfriend" People on Facebook and Why by Denise GriffittsToday on the Your Partner In Success Radio Show I had the opportunity to interview Diane Conklin who  is an internationally known marketing and business strategist. We talked a LOT about Twitter and Facebook and I was delighted to learn a few new tips and tricks from her about Twitter marketing for brick-and-mortar businesses. You will have to listen to the show to hear them!

One Facebook tip that I shared with our audience is how I clean out my Facebook friend list. It is a lot easier than you would think to hit that 5,000 friend limit and once you are there, you have no option but to either remove “friends” or create a Fan Page. So here is how I handle it.

Each day when I login to my Facebook profile I go to my home page and click on the birthdays for that day. By visiting each page listed I have the opportunity to see if this is really a connection that makes sense or if it was somebody that I accepted just because they asked way back in the day when I was first building up my Facebook presence. If that person is somebody that I am connected with at some level and who is active in my FB community, I wish them a very Happy Birthday and then go to the next page. If the next person is somebody that I have never connected with in all my years on FB, or who is using their page largely for personal connections or playing games like Farmville or Mafia Wars, I unfriend them and free up space for people who will have more in common with my business goals. Now before you start yelling at me, I see nothing at all wrong with playing games on Facebook if that is what you enjoy, but I am there for business, so my focus has to stay on social networking. The truth is, that when you have 5,000 connections on FB there are simply going to be some that don’t meet your networking criteria. Mentally wish them well and move on.

Russian Hacker Selling 1.5 Million Facebook Accounts

There is late breaking news that a Russian hacker claims to have 1.5 million Facebook accounts up for sale, which could potentially compromise your account.

According to Mashable, Verisign iDefense has uncovered a “cyber-crook on an electronic fraud forum selling 1.5 million Facebook accounts at a price of $25 per 1,000 accounts.” If the hacker’s claims are true, the 1.5 million accounts represent approximately 1 in every 300 Facebook users.

It is not yet known who the Facebook account holders are, but just to be safe, ReputationDefender recommends that you change your Facebook password immediately.

Here’s how:

  1. Login to your Facebook account.
  2. Click the Account tab in the upper right hand corner of your profile and select Account Settings.
  3. Select the Change option next to Password and you will be prompted to input your old password and select a new one.

Facebook Privacy Settings Have Changed

In the past couple weeks  Facebook has made a few changes that may have altered your Privacy settings and those of 350 million other users.

Depending on whether your Facebook profile is personal or used largely for business, you need to look at your privacy settings and determine just what you want other people and the search engines to see.

I recommend you take the following steps to update your profile and account privacy to the level that you want:

  1. Click on “Settings” in the upper left-hand corner of your screen, near the Search box.
  2. Click on “Privacy Settings” from the drop-down menu.
  3. Click on “Profile Information” and set each item listed to your preferred privacy level.
  4. Click “Back to Privacy” above the list of items.
  5. Click on “Contact Information” and repeat choosing your level of privacy for all the items listed, as you see fit.
  6. Click “Back to Privacy” above the list of items. And now Click on “Search” to edit who can search you, as well as if you want your profile at all to be indexed by search engines.

Read Facebook’s Privacy Policy here.

Audio Tools For Your Website or Blog

Audio Tools For Your Website or Blog

One of my very favorite blog’s is The Bigg Success Show which is a daily, five-minute conversation about succeeding professionally and personally.  I met up with George and Mary-Lynn on Facebook. If you don’t have a Facebook profile, you need one and I will go into the reasons for that in another post. Or several posts for that matter.  It is that important.

George contacted me to ask if I would be interested in chatting with them on their internet radio show about the Virtual Assistance industry.  As both a web developer and owner of an incredibly busy virtual assistance practice, I was delighted to do so.  You can listen to the interview here: http://biggsuccess.com/2008/06/23/help-i-need-somebody/

One of the greatest things that comes out of getting to knew these wonderful online entrepreneurs is the easy exchange of ideas and resources.  Mary Lynn very graciously shared with me her favorite recommendations for audio tools and I am delighted to pass this information to you.

The microphone she recommends to authors is the Logitech 350

The recording software she recommends is Total Recorder

The free recording software she recommends is Audacity

Mosey on over to Bigg Success and sign up for their newsletter.  It is a great resource for online entrepreneurs of any description.
